MEASURING RED BLOOD CELLS: A REVIEW OF AUTOMATED TECHNOLOGIES

An important clinical application of red blood cell (RBC) enumeration is the assessment of the severity and management of anemia in both acute (surgery, trauma, hemolysis) and chronic (hematological malignancies, chronic inflammatory conditions, kidney disease) conditions. In addition to the RBC count, RBC indices (mean cell volume: MCV; mean cell hemoglobin: MCH; and mean cell hemoglobin concentration: MCHC) provide useful information in these conditions.

Current hematology analyzers use impedance, optical technology or both (sometimes in a reflex testing setting) for counting and volume measurements of RBCs. Dependent on the technologies and methodologies employed by the hematology analyzer, results may be less vulnerable to interferences and reveal more morphological abnormalities.
